How I Created Healthy Boundaries in my Business
I have spent the better half of my career bending over backwards for everyone who needs me, wearing many different (metaphorical) hats in business and personal life, and let’s face it, there will always be someone that needs you at one stage or another, and since none of us are Marvel characters (time travel would be my superpower FYI), burn out is inevitable. So, to seriously change the game and have more balance in my life, I had to put some clear boundaries in place so I can run a business, be a mother and not go crazy in the process.
Everyone has boundaries, whether you call them that or not. Some are clearer than others but essentially, boundaries are those things in your life that are simply your non-negotiables. Now that is all well and good right? But learning to put these boundaries in place can be a little trickier.
I used to think that if I said I was unavailable for a client, then I would miss out on future work opportunities, so I would do everything I could, juggle everything I had to, swap, change, bend, snap and whatever else in order to fulfil everyone’s requests. Sure, they got what they wanted, but I was fucking exhausted!
So, putting in boundaries and using a few organisation tools has allowed me to really get honest with what I can realistically achieve in a week/month/year, whilst still being of service to my clients, and also to myself. These boundaries are never set in stone and I can always be flexible with them, but they are a good guideline for achieving less stress and maximum happiness each week (also wine helps too).
